Then-&-Now-Contest-Page-Banner-1

Many thanks to everyone who participated in the Baltimore Then & Now photo contest!

We received hundreds of beautiful and creative entries, highlighting nearly a century of changes to the streets of Baltimore. Contest judging took place in early December with representatives from the BMI and BGE, as well as a local professional photographer who did not take part in the contest.

We enjoyed looking at all of the photographs and we are delighted to announce the Grand Prize Winners. Congratulations to:

  •  Benjamin Bacon
  •  Carl Schmidt
  •  Bonnie Schloss
  •  Bonnie Schupp
  •  Jorge Ruiz

The winning photographs will be featured in our upcoming Baltimore Then & Now exhibition, along with historic photos from our BGE archival collection and hundreds of ‘now’ photos showing what those locations look like today. The Baltimore Then & Now exhibition will open on Friday, February 5, 2016; watch for more details as the date approaches.

Baltimore Gas and Electric Archival Collection

The BGE archival collection consists of approximately 80,000 photographs. These images were taken as part of BGE’s daily operations, and capture Baltimore’s workplaces, cityscapes, and life in Baltimore from the late 1920s through 2001. The photographs document the changing commercial, cultural, and physical landscape of the region. Nearly 10,000 of the photos are digitized and are available to view online, free of charge, in the BGE Image Database. The database is a great resource for historians, students, history buffs and those who want to know more about Baltimore’s heyday as an industrial giant.
