BGE-366.L – McCormick Spice Company, South Light Street, 1951.

The origins of the well-known spice producer McCormick & Company go back to 1889 when a young Virginian named Willoughby M. McCormick began selling root beer, flavoring extracts, and fruit syrups door-to-door in Baltimore. By the time its nine-story headquarters and factory building was built on Light Street in 1921, McCormick’s iconic red and white spice tins could be found in pantries across America. Locally, the company became synonymous with the scent of cinnamon, allspice, and cloves that hung sweetly over downtown Baltimore for decades.
